    • Summary

      This position is located in the Office of Administrator and Deputy Administrator. You will serve as a Special Assistant to the Administrator and/or Deputy Administrator, handling sensitive issues, scheduling and contributing to meetings, collecting briefing papers, for senior agency Department officials, Congressional and White House staff, and industry experts and stakeholders and otherwise accomplishing a variety of assignments.

      The ideal candidate for this position possesses good organizational skills and is capable of garnering support throughout the organization. NHTSA is looking for someone who is highly motivated, who can facilitate processes, and who can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at all levels of the organization . The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

      PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy may be used to fill similar positions within 60 days for this location.


      As a Special Assistant, you will:
      • Represent the Administrator and/or Deputy Administrator in telephone and contacts with high-ranking officials of this and other Departments and agencies; including the White House representatives; executives from the automobile industry; labor organizations; local governments; and highway and auto safety representatives; and constituents.
      • Develop and maintain the Administrators and/or the Deputy Administrator's calendar and establish priorities at own discretion; schedules appointments, meetings, conferences and speaking engagements; shifts or refuses appointments; and accepts or declines invitations to meetings.
      • Assist the Administrator and/or Deputy Administrator in developing briefing papers for the Office of Secretary on key NHTSA initiatives.
      • Work closely on projects by securing or coordinating the compilation of information from knowledgeable experts on the subject from other NHTSA or Department of Transportation (DOT) offices or outside agencies or sources, organized data and developing materials for use as a basis for briefings or discussion in meeting.
      • Ensure that all administrative activities fully serve the needs of the Administrator and/or Deputy Administrator and assists in carrying out his/her responsibilities by developing and maintaining scheduling activities.
      • Coordinate a variety of responsibilities ranging from calendar management, travel and meeting preparation correspondence and tracking Administrator and/or Deputy Administrator priorities.

      To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience or education requirements:

      FOR THE GS-12, to qualify on Experience , you must have one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11, it must include:
      • Experience managing a senior official’s calendar and schedule.
      • Experience working with internal/external organizations/offices and staff to coordinate activities to promote agency priorities.
      • Experience in organizing, prioritizing and coordinating multiple detailed work assignments in a time sensitive work environment.
      FOR THE GS-13, to qualify on Experience, you must have one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-12, it must include:
      • Experience managing a senior official’s calendar and schedule.
      • Experience working with internal/external organizations/offices and staff to coordinate activities to promote agency priorities.
      • Experience in organizing, prioritizing and coordinating multiple detailed work assignments in a time sensitive work environment.
      • Experience coordinating meetings, collecting briefing papers, correspondence and handling sensitive issues for senior officials.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
