The Mortgage Loan Underwriter is responsible for underwriting Conventional, FHA, USDA and VA loans following established company, agency and investor guidelines. The underwriter evaluates mortgage loan files and assesses risk based on compliance, agency, investor, and company guidelines. Position will be service-focused with superior time-management and communication skills, have the ability to multi-task, and possess attention to detail. Duties and Responsibilities:
Receives and reviews loan files for sufficient documentation to make an informed loan decision based on the product description and agency, company and investor guidelines. If there is insufficient information, requests the required information or documentation from the processor and/or originator. Review resubmitted files and documents Make and issue independent compliant loan decisions Maintain company service level and turn-time standards Respond to audits and post-closing errors and omissions in a timely manner Keeps informed of current trends in mortgage lending and market factors affecting mortgage lending. Ensure all compliance requirements, including credit union policies and procedures, are met Maintain working knowledge of agency and investor guidelines and policies Maintain a professional, courteous and friendly atmosphere for members and co-workers Mentor processing and originating staff on underwriting deficiencies Performs other duties as assigned
High school diploma or equivalent and minimum 5 years of underwriting experience required, with no gaps of employment; 5-10 years of experience preferred
A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Strong analytical decision-making and problem-solving abilities Excellent communication (verbal and written) and Interpersonal skills Maintains confidentiality Good time management skills and the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as real estate purchase contracts, loan program guidelines, tax returns, income documentation, credit reports and preliminary title reports.
Basic word processing and computer skills required Knowledge of Calyx and Encompass Software is helpful
