Your principal objective is to follow-up and adequately learn and acquire the tools being developed to measure and characterize the metaillc defects In the subsea pipelines through the Large Stand-off Magnetometry (LSM) technology. LSM is being developed in a Joint Industry Project (JIP) in Houston. The partners in the JIP are SHELL, TOTAL and Chevron. The JIP is being administered by Pipeline Council International (PRCI). The LSM tool works on the principle that any change in residual magnetic field of a submarine pipe could be attributed to defects present in the wall of the pipe. For this purpose, the residual magnetic field is measured from a very short distance to the pipe. The residual magnetic field is first measured at the start of service (Base Line) and then later after certain years of service. The variation measured is then correlated to the possible and type of defects in the wall of the pipe.
This non-intrusive technology can potentially allow quick screening of pipe defects through moving platforms (ROV and AUV) in the Deep-Offshore conditions. In case of detection of possible defects, more precise measurements can be done using more expensive technologies already qualified.
The JIP has two objectives: first is to acquire more in-depth understanding of the analytical model, and second to develop the tool for subsea conditions.

Your main missions will be the following :

You will follow-up the JIP progress as representative of TOTAL. Ensure that the recommendations given by the specialists in HQ are followed and provide the feedback. The recommendations could be regarding the criteria of inspection, data analytics and robotics. You should have the capacity to critically review the results, challenge them when needed and propose improvements when required. Good understanding of the physical mechanism is also expected as it will help provide the feedback to our MDT specialists in the domain in question

This study is part of the Deep-Offshore research program and supports the TOTAL strategy of developing new technologies for subsea inspection.
You will carry out your work under the direct supervision of the Deep-Offshore technologies manager in US research centre. For technical due diligence, you will also be guided by the DOP team and the specialists in HQ.

You will be responsible for the following activities:

Blind Test
The tests are being carried out at PRCI facilities in order to characterize the various types of pipe defects. The results are also being used by the company developing the algorithms and performing the data analytics. You must validate the acquired data, improve the problem definition and develop models.

Tool Development (Marinization)
Collaboration with partners/contractors, follow-up studies, fabrication and tests put together by the marinization contractor.

Data Analytics - Model
The existing and future acquired magnetisrn data will be used by the data analytics company to develop the models which would correlate magnetic data the various types of defects in the pipe. You should follow-up the activities, provide input as per the guidance provide by the SME in HQ.


  • Coordination of specific task requested by HQ

  • Taking notes of the meetings attended, weekly and monthly progress reports and presentations on the various subjects followed.

Context and environment

The selected candidate will receive a VIE allowance according to the Business France rates and the subsidiary will grant an accommodation (flatshare).
Driving licence is necessary to move around the city.

Master degree in Engineering School or PhD
Specialty : Fluid Mechanics, Process Engineering, Signal Processing, Physical Engineering

English : fluent
French : fluent

Technical skills
Knowledge of Pipeline, Fluid Mechanics, Physical Measurements
Knowledge of the oil field is an advantage
