The UNC Highway Safety Research Center ( HSRC ) is looking for a motivated, well written and spoken, organized, professional to join our communications team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable in both lead and contributory roles in HSRC’s communication and marketing activities and will be responsible for promoting HSRC , and research findings, programs, and activities for both state and national projects, campaigns and initiatives in a variety of focus areas.
The Communications Specialist will help support internal and external project communications needs including: media relations efforts (including social media), production of communications materials (including conceptualization, writing, and editing), coordinating and managing special events and training sessions, and writing, updating and maintaining multiple websites for HSRC (www.hsrc.unc.edu) and various state, federal and corporate funded projects. The candidate will also be a critical part of the University Transportation Center communications team and assist with project management and reporting for the grant, as well as support workforce development and training activities. The candidate will possess excellent attention to detail in project management and writing/editing tasks, and show an ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The ability to develop and lead communication activities with a thorough understanding of marketing principles and techniques; strong writing and verbal skills, including the ability to represent HSRC and other clients/projects in a professional manner at conferences and meetings; ability to write and edit communications materials (i.e. press releases, reports, collateral for conferences); ability to manage medium-to-large scale events, including conference participation, annual meetings, and events in collaboration with UNC -CH campus organizations and officials with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively; and ability to write and edit content for and maintain/update multiple websites using various CMS programs.
The ideal candidate will have experience in efficiently and successfully managing a variety of different projects on different deadlines; writing and editing marketing materials, including newsletter articles, news releases, website content, presentations, annual reports, brochures and other materials; writing and editing documents to align with specific organizational styles, guidelines and rules; coordinating a variety of in-person and digital events, including annual meetings, symposiums, webinars, trainings, conferences, etc.; leading marketing activities through social media, including blogging and social networks; fielding media calls and coordinating interviews for organization spokespeople with local and national media; managing the production of print materials, from concept to finished project; and the ability to translate research or technical information to the media and general public.
