The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is designed for undergraduate students and recent college graduates to increase their knowledge and interest in public health and biomedical science careers. The program serves as a platform that integrates science and practice for future public health professionals, physicians, dentists, nurses and research scientists, giving them a head start for a career in or relating to the public health sector.

SPHSP is a partnership between the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Dental Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Together they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. SPHSP has been made possible through grant funding awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Minority Health & Health Equity.

Position Description:
For the 2018 Summer Public Health Scholars Program, we are seeking Program Facilitators to assist with managing Public Health course and general program for approximately 42 students. Ideal candidates for the SPHSP Program Facilitator positions are those interested in working with undergraduate students and recent college graduates with a diverse range of abilities from diverse backgrounds. This opportunity provides a platform to assist with exercising curriculum construction, establish and execute course instruction, and differentiation skills. Program Facilitators will be paid at a rate of $15.00 per hour.

2018 PROGRAM DATES: May 29th through August 1st.

Job Responsibilities:Job responsibilities require the ideal candidates to:

  • Understand the overall goals and objectives of SPHSP;
  • Be available from May 29th through August 1st;
  • To live on-campus with the program scholars for the duration of the program. During that time, Program Facilitators will be required to sign up for an 'On Call' schedule and must serve on duty from 9am-9pm on assigned days. On-call duty responsibilities include monitoring the program phone and responding to reported emergencies accordingly. While on duty, Program Facilitators must be no more than 10 minutes away from the residence hall.
  • Be available to attend to full-day responsibilities every Thursday and Friday for the duration of the program. On these days, Program Facilitators will:
o Take attendance for all classes and program seminars
o Assist Preceptors with management of courses and other program seminars
o Lead sessions with students to review and discuss course materials and internship activities
o Serve as chaperones during field trips
o Attend to other duties as assigned;
  • Conduct weekly "office" hours at residence hall to provide academic support for students. These sessions should help students with:
o Coursework
o Case analyses
o Final paper & presentation
o Provide final evaluations of students in their respective groups
  • Attend weekly staff meetings which will be held on Tuesdays from 10AM - 12PM;
  • Coordinate weekend social events;
  • Host neighborhood tours at the Morningside and Medical Center campuses to familiarize SPHSP students with their new surroundings;
  • Assist Program Coordinator with internship site visits for approximately 10 students on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstration of leadership and organizational skill;
  • MPH student who has successfully completed at least 1 year of graduate study;
  • Columbia University students are preferred.
