The Health Law Fellowship provides a one-year experience in the Office of General Counsel of a regional, not-for-profit integrated healthcare delivery system. Reports to the Executive Vice President and General Counsel with day to day supervision from the Washington Region Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. Responsible for providing staff attorney support to designated projects. Participatse in leadershiplevel discussions and committees regarding the myriad of strategic and operational legal issues affecting the system. Observes, first hand, the legal role in the patient experience. Obtains practical experience through direct exposure to and active participation in a variety of legal activities across the system.
EDUCATION: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
EXPERIENCE: Experience with some aspect of health law or health care preferred.
LICENSE/CERT/REG: Bar eligible
SKILLS: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer and Microsoft Office skills. Preferred skills include: ability to analyze legal problems, conduct legal research and analysis, and offer operational advice to clients; ability to present and communicate complex information to various audiences, including internal clientele; solid proof-reading skills; initiative and ability to follow-up, high attention to detail, adherence to deadlines and strong problem-solving skills; advanced project/time management and strong organizational ability to manage large projects; ability to work collaboratively with team, and as an independent contributor.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Actively seeks opportunites to continuously improve systems and processes.
Attends MedStar Board Meetings and Board Committee Meetings.
Attends strategic and leadership meetings in the purview of the Office of General Counsel.
Builds a broad range of legal, management, administrative, and leadership skills.
Completes a signature project that impacts the business of MedStar Health as mutually agreed upon.
Completes special projects as designated by MedStar Health Office of General Counsel and its clients.
Contributes to a diverse array of business initiatives across MedStar by exchanging information, collaborating with other team members, and providing legal support.
Organizes and manages the recruitment and selection process for succeeding Health Law Fellow.
Performs legal work for the Compliance Department, Risk Management, Privacy Office, Office of the Secretary, and the Legal Department.
Performs other duties as assigned.
