Biological Technician 2
Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Biological Technician II to provide support to the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, WA. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. The person filling this position will analyze samples from Southern Resident killer whales for the presence of microbial pathogens, using state-of-the-art molecular techniques. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career lab technician to work on an important conservation project with guidance from a team of experienced research microbiologists.
This position would be in the Environmental Fisheries Sciences Division (EFSD) of the NWFSC. EFSD conducts research to assess and reduce natural and human-caused impacts on environmental and human health, and to improve methods for fisheries restoration and production in conservation hatcheries and in aquaculture. The Marine Microbes and Toxins Program within EFSD strives to understand the ecosystem dynamics, ecology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, and toxicology of marine microbes and their toxins.
This is a full time labor-hour non-personal service task order. Government personnel will be responsible for the overall scheduling of project activity and will provide the Contractor’s liaison/project manager with scheduling information as appropriate.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK AND SERVICES
The Contractor shall provide the following services throughout the period of performance and complete the following projects and deliver them to the NMFS on an as needed basis with full completion due no later than the end of the period of performance for each line item.
The contractor shall catalogue, prepare and analyze biological samples for microbial pathogens using established protocols and quality assurance procedures. Resulting data shall be entered into a database and quality checked. Preliminary summary statistics following established methods shall be prepared from the database. The contractor shall assist in preparation of text, tables and figures for reports and presentations. When necessary, the contractor may need to drive a US Government vehicle to an off-site location to retrieve samples.
LOCATION: Seattle, WA
SALARY: Commensurate with experience. Excellent benefit package.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Selected individual(s) must have the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major in a field of study directly related related to the requirements of the position.
Additional required qualifications include:
- A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience managing spreadsheets and entering scientific data.
- Practical (non-coursework) experience in a biological research lab.
Additional preferred qualifications include:
- Familiarity in creating tables and graphics with standard computer software.
- Experience with molecular techniques for identification of microbial pathogens.
