Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create, manage and grow UHCC's presence through blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and other strategically relevant online properties.
  • Keep current with emerging web technologies through relevant blogs, listservs, and events.
  • Identify threats and opportunities in user-generated online content surrounding UHCC brand and report to appropriate parties.
  • Interact with online journalists/bloggers to align their values and interests with UHCC's academic programs.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries, however they come in (phone, email, social media, news media, etc.) by answering questions directly or referring to appropriate resources.
  • Work closely with the web technical team to maintain website standards.
  • Assist in the development and execution of strategic, online marketing and/or communications plans in partnership with the community college campuses.
  • Assure web-based information is archived for future needs and reference.
  • Photograph, videotape and record UHCC events, activities and campus life to illustrate stories and articles on all UHCC online properties and print media.
  • Track and report on all site metrics.
  • Covers news or special events at campuses as assigned by supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with key team members, clients and vendors.
  • Create, develop and manage content for organization's web presence (requires working with content management system), including all internal and external digital properties such as websites, social media networks and other electronic alternatives.
  • (Cont'd) Content can take many forms, including plain text links, snippets, feeds, database content, still images (illustrations, photographs, diagrams), animation, audio, video, interactive devices (forms, chat rooms, polls, questionnaires, etc.).
  • Design and develop websites as needed.
  • Coordinate web projects across all departments.
  • Maintain consistent look and feel throughout all UHCC web properties.
  • Research, draft and finalize text for electronic and print publications as assigned, including but not limited to copy for Web pages and online news sites.
  • Working with a cross-departmental team, maintain and develop a master content calendar for all web properties.
  • Copy edit and proofread all web content, as well as ensure that all links are working and content is accurate.
  • Write news articles, press releases, reports, web content, and other written communications for all UHCC electronic and print media.
  • Monitors all content on UHCC's digital properties for consistency, voice, tone, and grammar according to the University of Hawai'i standards.
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Communications, Journalism or Computer Information Science or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for web content development for online properties with strong writing and editing skills; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the the field of web design and communications, journalism and/or social media marketing as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with web design and communications, journalism and/or social media marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Possess exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Possess exceptional English writing, proofreading and editing skills.
  • Functional knowledge of HTML and content management systems such as Drupal, Wordpress, etc.
  • Proficient understanding of the social media universe including YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, blogs, etc., with demonstrated creativity and documented immersion in social media (provide url).
  • Possess proficient skills in Adobe Photoshop or similar digital photo editing product.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and write copy that translates technical or discipline-specific terminology and/or visual analytics for a general, lay audience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to work outside of normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and/or holidays as directed.
  • Ability to travel independently to and from various in-state and out-of-state locations in a timely manner to cover topics, events, people, etc. and to meet deadlines.
  • Understand Associated Press (AP) style writing, University of Hawai'i style writing, and familiar with Hawaiian grammar.
  • Must possess driver's license.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of HTML and experience with designing websites using popular content management systems such as Drupal, Wordpress, etc.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within a cross-departmental team with 3-5 years of experience managing content and production for high traffic websites.
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite products (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, etc.)
  • Proficient in digital photography.
