    Summary

    This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman).

    The primary purpose of this position is assisting Immigration Law Analysts and Case Team leadership in working on individual requests for assistance.

    As a Immigration Case Assistant GS 0301 7, your typical work assignments may include:

    • Serves as a full performance level Immigration Case Assistant tasked with providing customer service to individuals, employers, and legal representatives in connection with requests for assistance.
    • Drafts inquiries for individual cases to be submitted to appropriate USCIS offices.
    • Recognizes and documents trends and patterns in receipts and USCIS processing.
    • Communicates with individuals, employers, or their representatives to obtain information and provide updates

    Qualifications

    Specialized Experience:
    You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you possess one of the following:
    • A. One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service, that demonstrates the ability to perform duties such as: preparing reports, providing case management services,communicating effectively with customers requesting service, and/or managing an organization's databases. Applicants must have an interest in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' adjudication procedures and practices,mission, functions, organization, policies and programs.OR
      B. One full year of graduate level education at an accredited or pre-accredited college or university; OR
      C. A combination of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. This will be calculated using your resume and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application; OR
      D. A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership:
      (1) Class standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
      (2) Grade-point average (GPA.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
      3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
      (3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society - Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (external link). Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

      Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
