The Director of Academic Design for Redbird will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage the editorial development process for all key titles in product portfolio and work to assure freelancers, vendors, and development staff are maintaining schedules and developing content according to established guidelines and standards within budget.
  • Lead the creation and execution of Academic Design (editorial) guidelines for digital learning tools and content development. This position will be responsible for compliance across all phases of digital development from inception to delivery to market.
  • Work with digital and content team to inform development of new tools/feature sets for digital products and platform development based on instructional design best practices.
  • Train content development staff and other internal stakeholders (senior management, sales representatives, and/or technology specialists, etc.) on new content tools and feature sets of digital learning as needed.
  • Work with Product Management and Marketing to conceptualize and plan new programs, establishing market and product requirements, milestone delivery dates, and budgets.
  • Manage program budget throughout development cycle including accurate tracking and forecasting of monthly spending.
  • The position will require extensive training on proprietary learning tool platform, and authoring environment provided by McGraw-Hill.
  • This position will require employee to manage and develop staff.

Required Skills:
  • Bachelors’ degree in education, math, or related field required. Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in K-8 math curriculum development is required
  • Classroom teaching experience in math or math intervention is preferred
  • Combination of 8 years of increasingly more senior/complex leadership roles in the field of educational publishing and business operations
  • Must have strong business operations background with experience in the planning and implementation of new business processes and systems
  • Must be detail oriented with strong fiscal and problem-solving skills
  • A forthright communicator exhibiting strong verbal, written and presentation skills, and is able to state expectations clearly and be visible to employees. Demonstrated success in building strong internal and external relationships
  • Strong hands-on skills and not hesitant to jump in and perform work when needed, but generally gets the work done through others

Actuals:
  • General
o Collaboration on platform-wide features and product messaging to sales, implementation and consumer, leading trainings if needed
o Collaboration daily with DPG to ensure product team is cohesive and in constant communication about the content/technology connection
o Collaboration on AD related processes/docs across the entire AD team
o Work with direct reports to establish quality expectations for content review to limit the number of reprint corrections and additional development costs (rework)
 Hands-on work on ensuring guidelines, prototypes and processes are clear and efficient; spot-checks on content throughout project development
o Work with team to manage vendors and freelancers with effective communication and guidance to minimize rework and control costs.
o Work with Finance, Product Management, and Program Management to manage approved plant spend and accurately forecast plant spend with explained variance.
o Manage Operating Expense budget to within established target by monitoring and tracking spending on a monthly basis.
o Apply new or existing processes or tools to build operational efficiencies throughout product development process, including MHE Style Guide, editing checklists, reprint process, response to content inquiries, teacher reviewer process, accessibility guidelines, template authoring guidelines, metadata tagging, course build, or other digital best practices.
o Apply academic integrity and cultural competence by applying academic integrity standards, implementing guidelines for expert content reviews, fact-checking, and use of reputable sources to reduce potential for error and enhance learning through a global perspective.
o Develop products within product roadmap on time according to plan, while successfully fulfilling defined vision to meet customer/market needs.
o Collaborate on Stage 1 and 2 timelines within portfolio planning roadmap. Work with project manager and product manager to backward map to ensure build time is appropriate. Develop detailed scope for effective resource planning and cost estimates for Stage 2 build.
o Facilitate and collaborate on developing student and teacher testing series of products to drive development. Including decisions on what to test, how to test, and how results will impact future development.
o Assess staff configuration and resource needs to execute product development plans and roadmap.
o Create action plans for staffing aligned with budget and timelines, looking at a variety of options for sourcing work. Work with greater AD team to resource according to project needs.
o Provide clear communication to staff on goals, performance expectations, and competencies.
o Mentor and/or guide junior staff to grow and develop high performing talent.
o Lead team through Stretch Forward engagement and other professional development opportunities.
o Hands-on work on all projects, reviewing prototypes, guidelines and content, setting up team, setting expectations with team and cross-functionally on process, schedule, budget.
o Oversee JIRA maintenance
o Approvals of all project work in Fieldglass and Ariba
o Employee evaluations
o Time off/Timecard approvals
