Assistant Director Alumni Career Development Graduate Student Jobs Vacancy in Columbia University New York Jobs Details:

The Center for Career Education (CCE) helps undergraduate, graduate students, and alumni develop the key competencies necessary to make informed decisions and take the necessary steps to achieve their career goals. The Center establishes connections and facilitates interaction among students, alumni, employers, and organizations to generate opportunities that help students pursue their personal and professional objectives. The Center for Career Education serves students in Columbia College; the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science; the School of General Studies; the School of the Arts and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and collaborates with Career Centers in the other schools at Columbia University and its affiliated institutions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working in a team-based environment to provide individual and group career development counseling to graduate students and alumni of graduate schools served by CCE; participation in the development and delivery of unit and CCE initiatives; the design, organization, and delivery of workshops; hosting, moderating, and coordinating panel presentations; and participation in special programs and events related to career education with a specific knowledge base of and experience with advanced degree requirements and populations (Masters and PhD). Career counseling will also include, career assessment, utilization of information technology for computer-assisted career planning and web-based programs.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Provide individual and group career counseling to alumni of Masters and PhD programs. Collaborate with other CCE staff working with alumni to initiate, develop, and manage programs designed to meet the career development needs of alumni.
  • Plan, develop, and present virtual and in-person workshops, panel discussions, and other events on career-related topics tailored for alumni. Work within a team environment to coordinate special events for alumni. Work with Alumni Relations and Development offices on campus and with the CCE counseling team to develop new programs and events for the alumni population. Represent CCE at alumni focused events generated by Alumni Relations and Development offices and other Columbia offices.
  • Serve as liaison to various constituencies and provide reports on activities and program outcomes to the senior leadership team at CCE.
  • Conduct industry and other career related research and develop Columbia relevant online and print resources and webcontent for use by graduate school alumni, graduate students, administrators, and faculty. Share new resources with CCE team members.
  • Provide coverage and team support as needed to help with Masters and PhD students career counseling appointments.
  • Participate in CCE program planning and assist other counselors/staff with implementation of programming.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade
Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. A minimum of 2-4 years experience in counseling, higher education, or related fields working with graduate level students required.

Strong knowledge base of graduate school program requirements and graduate student job search/career choice processes necessary. Experience with alumni programs and job search processes necessary. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment with diverse populations. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Higher Ed or Counseling Psychology or related field strongly preferred. Campus outreach experience preferred. Knowledge of, or background in, applied sciences or engineering students a plus.
